Video poker is one of those rare, desirable forms of online gambling where the House edge is minimal. While slot machines offer the House an edge of anywhere from five to 25 percent, the right video poker machine can have a House edge as low as less than half a percent,

...meaning the House can expect less than a penny return for each dollar wagered when the game is played correctly. Clearly, there are tremendous benefits to implementing proper video poker strategy.
Choosing a Video Poker Machine
The most important element in video poker strategy is choosing the right machine. The standard video poker machine is a “Jacks or Better” machine, which means the minimum hand you will get paid on is a pair of jacks. On a Jacks or Better machine, the optimal pay table pays nine coins for a full house and six coins for a flush. These are referred to as 9/6 machines. Any other machines are “short pay” machines. These machines provide a higher edge to the House and should be avoided. The one exception might be if you are considering a progressive machine with an extremely large progressive jackpot. While it is generally better strategy to forgo the chance to win the big jackpot in favor of a machine with better odds on hands that are likely to pay off, some players find the temptation of the huge score too great to resist. Even a machine with a giant online video poker progressive jackpot should never be played if the payout offered is lower than eight coins for a full house and five coins for a flush.
Basic Video Poker Strategies: High Cards
If you have one or two high cards and no real straight or flush possibilities (three to a straight or flush) just keep the high cards. If you pair any of them, you will be a winner. If you have three high cards and two are suited, keep the two suited ones to give yourself both pair and flush options.
Basic Video Poker Strategies: Pairs
If you have a high pair, keep it unless you have four to a royal flush. This is guaranteed money and you can’t afford to give it away. If you have a small pair, draw at it unless you have four to a flush going. You have a better chance of making trips or another pair then of making an open-ended straight or a three card flush.
