A new train service from New York to
Atlantic City debuts next weekend. A sneak preview is being offered
tonight for the new service, dubbed "ACES" for Atlantic City Express
Service.
This is the first, ever direct train service from New York to the
gambling enclave
, and casino officials hope it will help entice gamblers who wouldn't be able to come by car or bus.
The service is a joint venture being paid for by Harrah's, Resorts and the Borgata with financing from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. The four double-decker cars will feature leather seats, food and drink and other amenities.
Passenger service will start next weekend and will be offered on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The ACES train will offer two grades of seats, first-class and coach, with leather seating, food and beverage kiosks and space for luggage, said Maureen Garrity, a spokeswoman for the express train.
New Jersey's Transit Board last year approved a contract with the manufacturer of the trains, Bombardier, Inc., to modify the interiors of the multilevel cars.
ACES will depart from New York City's Penn Station. After stopping at Newark Penn Station, the trains will travel through Trenton, N.J on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor line, crossing the Delaware River and continuing north of Philadelphia, where they will merge onto NJ Transit's Atlantic City Line.
"It's a service that will support one of New Jersey's largest tourist destinations," said Dan Stessel, a spokesman for NJ Transit.
The casinos
paid nearly $15 million to purchase and modify eight new multilevel rail cars, according to the consortium. The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, a state agency that provides money for economic development, paid $4.5 million to NJ Transit toward the purchase four diesel locomotives from Amtrak.
The trains are using both electric and diesel cars to accommodate the types of power used on the Northeast Corridor and
Atlantic City
lines.
