Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland -- staring down a $3.2 billion
gambling deficit -- has relented on his opposition to expanding
gambling in the state to gather hundreds of millions of dollars.
The Democrat Strickland disclosed his change of heart at a Columbus news conference at which he also detailed deep spending cuts.
The plan, developed by the Ohio State Racing Commission, plans to place slotsat the seven Ohio racetracks, generating a fast $175 million in licensing fees. Backers believe 48 percent of ensuing proceeds would go to Ohio schools — $195 million in fiscal 2010 and $310 million in fiscal 2011.
An alliance of bars and restaurants also wants 83,000 machines in their businesses, after local option votes, producing what they say would be $83 million in one-time fees and $50 million in recurring fees, and up to $1.2 billion in revenue for Ohio schools.
The plan may well generate net revenue of $765 million, according to experts.
