Nine gaming bills have been scheduled for public hearing before Maine politicians.
Gov. John Baldacci, a foe of increased gambling in Maine, said he still objects to the plans, but he is persuadable.
Baldacci said he is generally opposed to new slot machine operations, but that the decision on approving such initiatives should be left to state voters.
A bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. Bruce Bryant of Dixfield would authorize the operation of slot machines at a tribal commercial track and a commercial track located in Oxford County.
The bill would also authorize a high-stakes beano license for a federally recognized Indian tribe to operate games in Washington County.
Public hearings are set this week before the Legislature's Committee on Legal and veterans Affairs.
