gambling tax before holding a new round of bidding for a slot-machine
facility there.

The western Maryland-based site has emerged as a leading contender for a new casino during an initial round of bidding, held by the state government.
According to Robert Brennan, executive director of the Maryland Economic Development Corporation, the financier behind the new casino, he lobbied the state yesterday, asking legislators to re-evaluate the outrageous 67 percent tax on gambling proceeds.
The state's Senate president Mike Miller said he will support a reduced tax rate -- but only for the new facility at Rocky Gap. Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley (D) said he plans to introduce the legislation to slash the taxes next year.
