Memorial Day made May a momentous month for Mississippi casinos, with gross gambling revenues increasing more than 13 percent from the prior month.

Eleven Mississippi casinos earned $108.4 million in May. The total tops the $104.3 million the casinos won in May 2007, according to the state gambling commission.

Though devastated by Hurricane Katrina,  Mississippi casinos are still rebuilding. The areas where the casinos are located are back to normal and the inland areas, shops, and golf courses are back in operation. While there is still a lot of reconstruction underway, the Mississippi Coast remains a fun place visit and you will see the exciting changes the post-Katrina era is bringing.
Most casinos offer transportation service to and from the airports in Memphis and at the Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport.

Mississippi law requires at you must be at least 21 years old to play in a casino there.

Mississippi's casinos are 24-hour a day operations, and generally don't close. There are rare exceptions -- as when casinos on the Gulf Coast temporarily close if there is a hurricane or tropical storm forecast to hit nearby. Riverfront casinos may close if there are unusually high river levels. In every case, the closure is well announced in the news media. MississippiCasinos.com will also carry those notices.

Gamers can use chips from one casino at any other state casino without exchanging them. However, the dealers will substitute those chips with those from their casino when played. You should ask your dealer, or the cashier about the chips if you have any questions. It is normal for the dealers and cashiers to examine carefully the chips from other casinos.

New York-based Fitch Ratings has assigned an 'AA' rating to the State of Mississippi's $9.775 million general obligation (GO) bonds, expected to be offered competitively. The recovery in the gaming industry contributes to the excellent rating. "The casino industry, aided by legislation now allowing their location on land, has rebounded and most facilities have reopened," writes Fitch.  "Revenue impact from the hurricane was more modest than expected, even with the destruction of several casinos, which had provided growing revenue."

After the storm, the state lowered fiscal 2006 revenue estimates, yet all major revenues ultimately exceeded original predictions by over $300 million. Fiscal 2006 results reflected recovery-driven general fund revenues of $4.33 billion, up nearly 13% over fiscal 2005. Sales tax revenue was up 17%, income tax up 7%, and corporate income tax up 14% over 2005. Strong revenue performance continued in fiscal 2007, led by strong growth in income and corporate tax receipts, resulted in a $380 million surplus, $191 million of which was transferred to the working cash-stabilization fund and the $264.2 million balance represents 5.3% of budgeted fiscal 2007 expenditures.
